What is a massage therapist?

Massage therapists have completed many hours of education which includes a variety of bodywork techniques, extensive anatomy and when massage is and is not appropriate.

Massage and related bodywork techniques can release painful muscle tension, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, and reduce mental fatigue.  It is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress.  Some new research has emerged regarding the healing power of touch.  Benefits such as reducing stress hormones and boosting immune responses are placing a new light on massage.

Massage can relieve many types of muscle tightness.  Muscles can become so contracted that they press on nerves to the arms, hands and legs, causing pain or tingling.

Injuries ~

Massage can help heal injuries such as tendonitis that develop over time, as well as ligament sprains or muscle strains caused by an accident.  Massage reduces inflammation by increasing circulation, which removes waste products and brings nutrition to injured cells.  Certain massage techniques can limit scar tissue formation in new injuries and can reduce, or make more pliable, scar tissue around old injuries.

Secondary pain ~

Some conditions have other causes, i.e. pregnancy. Some pregnant women have considerable relief with massage from the postural changes they experience from being pregnant.

Massage can influence posture by releasing restricted tissue such as connective tissue called fascia.  It also helps to elongate shortened muscles that cause any necessary pain.

Some of the benefits of massage are ~

  • increases circulation
  • reduces toxins built up in the  muscles
  • increases speed of the healing process
  • reduces adhesions (scar tissue)
  • relieves hypertonic muscles and chronic pain
  • helps regulate sleep patterns
  • enhances flexibility
  • reduces blood pressure
  • reduces mental and physical stress and fatigue

Ear Candling:  Ear candling is a safe and effective way to help with many symptoms from plugged ears to sinus problems.  This treatment takes about one hour and two   candles are used per ear.

Pregnancy Massage:  Massage during pregnancy is beneficial to increase circulation and decrease swelling of the lower extremities.  It also helps relieve muscle strain and tension from the increased weight of the baby.  Massage also helps expectant mothers to relax and take time for themselves.

Infant Massage:   Learning infant massage helps you to understand your baby's nonverbal behaviors.  It deepens the bond between you and your baby.

Tui Na for Children:  Tui Na has been used extensively in China for 2,000 years.  Tui Na for children is specialized for pediatrics between the ages of birth to ten years of age. Very gentle pushing and pulling techniques, along with passive and active stretching is utilized to restore correct anatomical musculoskeletal relationships, neuromuscular patterns, and to increase the circulation of blood to remove biomechanical irritants during the treatments.  This method is used for a variety of conditions including coughs, asthma, common colds, bedwetting, attention deficit disorders, and allergies, along with MANY others.  Tui Na is based on the meridian theory and is comparable to a combination of massage and acupressure.  During the treatments, parents may be present and often hold the child during the session.
